Keynote Speakers ASTA 2019

 Bio Highlights – Dr. Doug Phillips

Doug “Dr. Doug” Phillips is widely known for his adventurous travels in Alabama’s wildlands as host of a highly-rated public television program. Discovering Alabama is an educational documentary series featuring the natural history and natural wonders of Alabama.  In addition to creating and producing this Emmy award winning series, Dr. Phillips has pioneered many other important Alabama initiatives for education and conservation, including the acclaimed school curriculum Discovering Our Heritage:  Incorporating Environmental Education to Integrate the Teaching of History, Geography, Science, Mathematics, and Language Arts - A Community Collaborative Approach as well as the nationally-recognized model for wildland conservation, theAlabama Forever Wild Program.  Dr. Phillips currently serves as the Alabama Museum of Natural History’s Coordinator for Environmental Information and Education at the University of Alabama, where he has also authored numerous publications including two national award- winning books, Discovering Alabama Wetlands and Discovering Alabama Forests.



Bio Highlights – Brian Butler

Brian Butler, the NSTA District V Director, represents science teachers of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, PuertoRico, and the Virgin Islands.  He is a passionate science educator presently serving as the Bibb County (GA) School Improvement Coordinator for Science.  Prior to his current role, Brian was an eighth grade middle school science teacher and a high school science teacher of various subjects with a passion for Physics and Physical Science in Macon, Georgia.

Mr. Butler's goal is to provide opportunities for all students to have authentic scientific experiences in their classrooms and strives for all students to become scientifically literate citizens.  This passion for students has been recognized by his peers and Mr. Butler was a finalist for the 2016 Georgia Teacher of the Year.  He has also served as President of the Georgia Science Teachers Association.  

Originally from Virginia, Brian holds a specialist degree as well as an MAT degree from Georgia College and a B.S. in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma where his love for science was enhanced by the ability to chase tornadoes! Prior to education, Mr. Butler is proud to have served as a meteorologist in the United States Air Force with duty stations in Arizona and Mississippi before moving to Georgia where he has lived since 2003.
